What counts as a small win?

Choose evidence of growing independence or skill, not only a high score. Completing the first step, asking for the right help, or returning after a mistake can all be worth noticing.

Keep the milestone genuine

A goal should be within reach but not meaningless. Agree on what “done” looks like before beginning, then use calm, specific feedback when the child reaches it.

Help the child explain the progress

Ask: “What did you do that helped?” The answer might be slowing down, checking an example, practising, or asking a question. This links the success to a strategy the child can use again.

Move forward without rushing

After a success, repeat the skill in a new context or add one modest challenge. Children do not need constant escalation; they need enough repetition to feel that the new skill belongs to them.
